Phenicillin: what (small) place for an old antibiotic in 2022?
La phénéticilline est un ancien antibiotique de la
classe des pénicillines disponible depuis mars 2022 en
Belgique dans trois formulations orales différentes. La
phénoxyméthylpénicilline (pénicilline V) n’étant plus sur le
marché belge, la phénéticilline pourrait être un substitut pour
ses indications, principalement la pharyngite à streptocoques.
Ses avantages par rapport à l’amoxicilline sont un spectre
plus étroit, une pression de sélection de résistance moindre
et moins d’effets potentiels sur la prolifération de Candida
spp et C. difficile. Les contre-indications et les précautions
sont similaires à celles de la classe des pénicillines et une
attention particulière doit être portée à l’administration (à
jeun) et aux conditions de stockage.
Pheneticillin is an old antibiotic of the penicillin class
available since March 2022 in Belgium in three different
oral formulations. As phenoxymethylpenicillin (Penicillin
V) is not in the belgian market anymore, pheneticillin could
be a substitute for its indications, mainly Streptococcal
pharyngitis. Its benefits over amoxicillin are its narrower
spectrum, less resistance selection pressure and potential
fewer effects on proliferation on Candida spp and C.
difficile. Contraindications and precautions are similar to
those of the penicillin class and particular attention needs
to be taken with administration (on an empty stomach) and
with storage condition.
