From the « cerebral lymphatics » to the glymphatic system: the special case of Pr Jean-Daniel Picard (1927-2013)
The idea of lymphatic channels in the central nervous system was long considered heresy. However, a system designed to reabsorb fluids from the brain via perivascular channels that drain into the meningeal lymphatics has gradually been revealed. This is the glymphatic system. However, a french radiologist, Prof Jean-Daniel Picard, who was strongly committed to the idea of the existence of a cerebral lymphatic system, published two articles on the subject in 1990. While his intuition proved to be correct, we demonstrate here that these results were misinterpreted and that the methodology was not appropriate.
