Sonography : a future imaging modality for the general practitioner ?
Apparue à la fin des années ‘50, l’échographie s’est depuis lors largement développée et diffusée. Ne se limitant pas aux seules informations morphologiques, elle inclut de plus en plus d’éléments d’imagerie fonctionnelle. Les nouveaux développements technologiques et les principaux domaines d’application de l’écho- graphie sont revus, de même que la gestion des incidentalomes échographiques. Le tryptique échographique correspondant à la relation entre le patient, l’échographe et l’échographiste est analysé en insistant sur les paramètres qui peuvent influencer le résultat final de l’examen. Sont également discutés les nouvelles approches de l’imagerie échographique comme le POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) ou le FAST (Focussed assessment with sonography in trauma) ainsi que le rôle potentiel que pourrait jouer le médecin généraliste dans la réalisation d’un examen échographique.
Introduced at the end of the ‘50s, ultrasound has widely developed and spread since then. Not limited to morphological information, sonography more and more includes elements of functional imaging. The new technological developments of ultrasound, and the main fields of application of sonography are reviewed, as well as the management of the so-called ultrasound incidentaloma. The triangular relationship between the patient, the ultrasound machine, and the operator are reviewed, with a special attention to those parameters affecting the final results of an ultrasound examination. The new applications of ultrasound imaging such as the POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) or the FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma) are also discussed, as well as the potential role of the general practitioner in performing ultrasound examinations personally.
