La prévalence du diabète est en hausse. Certains parlent d’une épidémie qui a commencé aux Etats-Unis, et qui s’étend maintenant à l’Europe. D’un autre côté, l’évolution de cette maladie est mieux connue, et des moyens existent pour détecter précocement les complications qui en découlent. Le médecin traitant peut jouer un rôle clé au niveau de l’information, du dépistage, du suivi et du traitement du patient diabétique. Renforcer la collaboration entre le médecin traitant et le spécialiste est fondamental aussi bien au niveau de l’information que de la prise en charge de cette maladie. Prevalence of diabetes is increasing. Some are speaking of epidemic of diabetes who started in the USA and who is now extending in Europe. Nevertheless, our knowledge of this disease is better, we can diagnose earlier and than prevent the complications of diabetes. The general practitioner can play a leading part in the field of information, of detecting, of follow-up and of treatment of the diabetic patient. Intensify the collaboration between the general practitioner and the specialist is essential to create a synergy and to improve the quality of the information and the follow-up of this disease.
