Obesity, a recognized chronic disease linked to adiposopathy, has a significant impact on individuals, families, and society as a whole. The number of obese patients has tripled since 1975, and more than one billion people worldwide suffer from this disease. We are currently talking about the obesity pandemic. Obesity can be assessed using the Body Mass Index (BMI) as well as scales that take into account medical, functional, and psychological complications. Different phenotypes of obese patients exist, and it is important for healthcare professionals to accurately identify the patient’s phenotype in order to best guide therapeutic management. The Belgian Association for the Study of Obesity (BASO) has published, free of charge on its website, recommendations for medical and paramedical professionals to treat patients with obesity. General practitioners play a central coordinating role in the care of patients suffering from obesity.

Role of the general practitioner in the management of obese patients
